CO₂ Extraction

Commercial-Scale CO₂ Extraction

Custom extraction plants, in-line dewaxing, developmental toll processing, and commercial partnerships.

Custom Plant Design and Fabrication

We have designed, fabricated and run our own distillation plants for decades. We bring the same work to commercial CO₂: we size the plant around your material and throughput, then engineer and fabricate it.

Methods developed at bench and pilot scale carry straight over, because the control is the same.

Real-Time Winterization

In-Line CO₂ Dewaxing

CO₂ extracts often carry plant waxes and fatty acids that are solid at room temperature. The usual fix is ethanol winterization: dissolve the crude extract in ethanol, freeze it, filter out the waxes, then evaporate the ethanol. It takes days, needs its own equipment and costs some of the compounds you were after.

Real-Time Winterization, developed by our CO₂ lead Jeremy Diehl, does that work inside the extraction run.

How Real-Time Winterization Works

Everything happens inside a standard CO₂ extraction run.

  1. Extract

Botanical material is extracted under normal CO₂ extraction conditions.

  2. Dilute

Right after the extraction vessel, fresh CO₂ is added to the stream, so the oil stays dissolved.

  3. Chill

The stream is cooled until the waxes come out of solution, while the compounds you want stay dissolved.

  4. Filter and collect

An inline filter catches the waxes. Clean, dewaxed oil flows on to the separators.

What Changes

Days back in production

Dewaxing happens during extraction, not as a separate step that takes days afterward.

Less equipment

No fume hood, cryogenic freezer, filter skid or rotary evaporator for winterization. A smaller footprint and a smaller team for the same throughput.

No flammable solvents

CO₂ is the only solvent, so there is no ethanol to buy, store or recover.

Full-spectrum oil

Light and heavier terpenes, sesquiterpenes included, are extracted and dewaxed in one run. The oil often needs no further processing.

Clean-up for existing oils

A standalone version dewaxes oils already extracted, including those made with other solvents.

Extracts That Carry Waxes

We have shown single-pass extraction and dewaxing on vanilla. Other good candidates are spices, frankincense and other resins, citrus peel, flowers and concretes, hops, tea and coffee: anything you winterize with ethanol today.

Developmental Toll Processing

Send us your botanical and we extract, dewax and fractionate it on our systems, then return the extract to you. We work at developmental volumes: enough for samples, evaluation and first trials before you invest in equipment.

Partnerships and Licensing

We work with fragrance houses, flavor companies, extractors and brands. You bring the idea, the botanical or the plant; we bring CO₂ systems, methods and decades of raw-material experience.

From extract to finished product

Through Project Fragrance, an extract can become a finished fragrance or product.
