When the steam has carried the oil out of the wood, what's left is clean, fragrant cedar fiber.
Where it goes
About half of our spent wood fiber goes straight back into the plant as fuel for our biomass boilers. The steam that distills tomorrow's oil comes from yesterday's wood.
The other half we sell: for garden mulch, landscaping and animal bedding. Some even goes to oil and gas drilling, where wood fiber is mixed into drilling fluid to seal cracks and porous rock so the fluid isn't lost underground (Drilling Manual).
The boiler
In 2025 a new biomass boiler started serving our Leakey plants, running on our own spent cedar.
